Below is a sample welcome letter to all-star players and parents. It mentions some of the differences between rec and all-star play. Every coach is different, make sure you know what their policy is. Please make sure you understand their policy about playing time and positions! There can be hard feelings about playing time. If you don't like their policy, please don't play.

Dear Players and Parents:

Welcome to the PYSA All Star Tournament season. We look forward to a successful season and hope that everyone will have a positive experience. To insure a successful season, we believe that communication is important, as well as understanding the process and commitment.

All-star play is very different from our recreation season. First, only 9 players are on defense and offense in the 10U, 12U, and 14U teams. The amount of players in the 8U will be determined on which tournament we are in. Some tournaments 9 play in the field, but everyone bats, or it might be 10 play in the field etc. On the 10U, 12U, and 14U teams a designated player can be used. If this option is used, 10 players are effectively in the game. In the 10U, 12U, and 14U pitchers can walk batters. The emphasis during our recreation season was not so much on winning, but learning fundamentals, building self-esteem, and developing players' skills. In all-star play, the emphasis is on winning and learning the team concept. There is no rule that requires all the players to participate in a game as we did during the recreation season. This is the most difficult area for players and parents to accept because the best 9 players, in the coaches' eyes, will see the majority of playing time. With 12 to 15 players on the team, it is very important to understand that not all substitutes will play in games.

We strongly believe in the word TEAM. Our definition of TEAM is a group of individuals drawn together to work toward a common goal or objective. Please note that there is no "I" or "ME" in the word TEAM. We see every member of the team sharing and participating equally in the team's success and failure, regardless of their role or the amount of playing time they get.

We hope that if you do not get the playing time that you expect that you view the all star experience as a summer softball camp where you have new experiences, and develop new skills. Thank you, All Star Coaches:
